Blank sailing: rebuild the shipment plan after a cancelled voyage
Check the scope of a cancelled sailing, compare alternatives and update equipment, document and inland arrangements.

Compare feasible options and send a concise, factual customer update.
A blank sailing is a cancelled scheduled voyage in a service. Disruption notices may also concern omission of a particular port. Read the scope: losing one call and cancelling a whole rotation can require different solutions for your shipment.
First establish the affected service, week, direction and port. Then connect the notice to your booking. A general market announcement is not an update to every reservation.
Confirm what was cancelled
Keep the carrier's source notice with its date and version. Record voyage reference, affected port and any proposed alternative coverage.
Maersk's historical AE3 notice for week 46 of 2025 illustrates such an announcement; it is not news of a currently cancelled sailing. This guide assumes no current disruption on your route.
Ask the shipment coordinator to connect the notice to your booking and establish whether an existing reservation will be amended or an alternative still needs selection and acceptance.
Review arrangements based on the old plan
Check the warehouse's loading day and whether a truck has been ordered. Inform people whose work depends on the affected operation. Do not automatically cancel services before checking their conditions.
Establish equipment status. If an empty has been collected, ask about continued use, storage or return and their requirements. If goods are loaded, include the actual location and handling restrictions.
Compare alternatives consistently
| Criterion | Required confirmation |
|---|---|
| Sailing | Reference, port and availability status |
| Dates | Planned departure, arrival and onward-delivery conditions |
| Equipment | Type, quantity and use of containers already collected |
| Route | Connections and any port change |
| Price | New scope and costs of changing the original operation |
| Documents | Required amendments and deadlines |
| Decision | Acceptance method and deadline |
Do not choose solely by the first departure date. An earlier option may need a different port, extra inland movement or a connection. Assess the complete plan to the agreed delivery point.
Two fictional options
In a training scenario, option A retains the port and equipment but has a later planned departure. Option B shows an earlier date from another port, while inland transport and container acceptance remain unconfirmed.
B cannot yet be called the faster delivery. Obtain feasible port-delivery timing, cut-offs and the onward schedule. Mark an option incomplete if one of these answers is missing.
Include the work required to change the old plan in the cost comparison. A replacement freight rate alone excludes consequences for services already ordered.
Update the operation after approval
Collect the revised booking confirmation and equipment instructions. Recheck SI, VGM and gate-in independently. Deadlines from the cancelled voyage should not remain active tasks without verification.
Record the outcome for the old booking and related orders. When splitting a shipment, check quantities in each option and their total. Distribute one current plan to the warehouse, haulier and document preparer.
Tell the customer what is established
Separate the carrier's announced change, confirmed solution and unresolved points. Present the timing impact as a current plan or assessment according to the evidence available.
Do not promise a sailing from a proposal or assign a cause the carrier has not stated. Replace “we are monitoring” with a defined next check and update time.
New-plan checklist
- The notice concerns my service and booking.
- Voyage cancellation and port omission are distinguished.
- Equipment and ordered services have been checked.
- Alternatives have comparable scope, dates and costs.
- Approved instructions replace outdated ones.
- The customer knows confirmation status and the next update.
