How to plan container and trailer loading

From pallet dimensions to comparing 3D layouts: the data you need and why cargo volume alone cannot tell you whether everything fits.

Start with the actual dimensions

Record the length, width and height of every unit, including its pallet, packaging and anything protruding beyond the base. Enter the quantity and weight per unit. Measuring only the goods can underestimate the space required.

For example, four units measuring 120 × 80 × 120 cm occupy 4.608 m³ in total. At 250 kg each, their combined weight is 1,000 kg. This is a starting point, not yet a loading arrangement.

Volume does not describe the layout

Loads with the same volume can need different amounts of floor space. A long item that cannot be rotated behaves differently from several small cartons. Set the allowed rotations and stacking rules before comparing equipment.

If packaging cannot support a load, mark the unit as non-stackable. Empty space above it is not automatically available for other goods.

Compare the space and the loading opening

Add cargo groups, set the rules and run the planner. Compare the results for 20DV, 40DV, 40HC, Standard and Mega trailers. Check the number of placed units, weight and arrangement, not just the percentage of volume used.

Internal dimensions and the door opening are different measurements. Hapag-Lloyd specifications are examples from its fleet; dimensions can vary with the manufacturer. Confirm the actual equipment with the operator before booking.

Use the report to agree the plan

View the layout from several angles and save the report with a project name. Tell the warehouse which orientations and stacking assumptions you used. Recalculate after changing dimensions or quantities.

A geometric fit is not a securing design. Cargo restraint, a workable loading procedure and permissible loads still need separate checks, including axle loads for road transport.
